Homework #2

The Truth in a Letter

Chapter 1 - Berlin, November 27,1962

It was past midnight;A fifty year old man stood in the middle of Saint-Merck Square. He looked at his watch:12:17. His correspondent was late. It was then that he realized he had fallen into a trap. But it was too late;already a shot had been fired. A moment later his body fell to the ground. He was dead.

Chapter 2 - Hamburg, March 5, 1934

It was the most beautiful day for the Hunger family, because on this day the small Frederick was born. Mr. and Mrs. Hunger were over the moon with joy. All the family was there.

But, on this same day something most important happened. On this, the same day that Frederick was born, Adolf Hitler became president of Germany. And, something that I didn’t tell you:Mrs. Hunger was Jewish. The first thing they did was to think how to save the life of Frederick. So, they decided to take him to England.

Chapter 3 - Hamburg, March 6, 1934

At 5 AM as decided, Mrs. Hunger and her son took aboat from the port of Hamburg and went up the Elbe. The travel passed without problem. When they arrived at the North Sea beach the other boat was there; however, something was wrong. That's when she realized that the patrol was moving from one moment to another; they could be caught at any time. So, she ran as quickly as she could. She put Frederick in the boat, she slipped a letter in the pocket of Frederick’s shirt and said: “goodbye”.

Chapter 4 - London, June 19, 1940

It was six years ago that the sister Marie found Frederick on the beach; she had taken him to the convent and loved him like her own son.Today was an important day, because she was going to give the letter to Frederick. In the letter was the following note:

My dear Frederick,

When you read thisletter I'll probably be dead. But don’t try to find me because you would probably just experience the same fate as me.

I love you.

Your Mum

Chapter 5 - The same day, two hours later

Fredrick made a decision. His dream was maybe the truth; maybe his mum was alive. He decided to pack his stuff (that didn’t take him too long time because he only had two or three shirts and pants). He waited for Sister Marie to go away and he crept out by the window.

Chapter 6 - London, June 20, 1940

He walked six hours, finally arriving at the beach. There was only one boat on the beach.

A fisherman stood next to the boat. Fredrick cried out to him: “Can you get to Germany in your boat?”

The man answered Fredrick: “You want me to go to Germany while it’s at war?!! And how old are you?”

He said: “I am six years old and I live in the convent of Saint-Henry. I want to go to Germany to find to find my mother”.

“But you are too young; I am going to take you back to the convent”.

Chapter 7 - London, the same day, a few hours later

Sister Marie was really disappointed. She cried to Fredrick:“ I didn’t think that if I let you read the letter you would try to run away from the convent. “If you want to see your mum okay, but only when you are 18 yearsold.”

Chapter 8 - Berlin, November 4, 1962

The war had already been finished for seven years. Fredrick was 18 years old and (right then) he was at the Berlin library trying to find something on his parents. After three hours of research, he found a document about his father that said:

“Mr. Jack HUNGER collaborated with the Nazis. He denounced is wife and his son because they were Jews.”

Now he knew his mum was dead because his dad was a stupid man. That’s why he decided to kill his father, and that’s what he did:

He wrote an anonymous letter that said to meet in the middle the Saint-Merck Square at midnight, and he gave the letter to the post man.

(Now you know who the man was who died.)
